Evolution of ideas for our A2 short film

Evolution of ideas for our A2 short film:

Before we came to a final idea, we went through some other options we were considering. At first, we wanted to make something darker to what we did last year. With a darker atmosphere, we could create a better mise en scene which would generate a much more interesting image. Creating a darker atmosphere would give us more experience in filmmaking as we would tackle different and new ideas in all areas of production.

THE INITIAL IDEAS
We wanted to create a film around a character that was mute. This brought up many ideas as to how the character would perceive and communicate with the world around him. The character was going to use sign language to communicate and the story was centred around his school life. We went through many different interpretations of this idea, such as a love story and comedy but we ended up going with a thriller.

The thriller version of the film about a mute character was the most exciting for us as it had a dark premise that was very different to what we had created previously. The story revolved around a mute boy and his friend wanting to take the tongue off of someone who was constantly harassing him. The mute boy's friend would be the catalyst by telling him to do it but it would turn out in the end that, the friend was actually his inner voice.

We enjoyed the possibility of filming this but as we started to develop the idea more, we started to come into some issues with how long the film would be and how the story plays out. We realised that revenge stories are somewhat cliche so we decided to stop production on this idea before it was too late.

THE FINAL IDEA
We started to look at how death is represented in different countries and we looked at the Greek (Ferryman) Charon, who brings the dead to the afterlife through the mythical river Styx. This became the basis for our story. We decided to pursue a modern take on The Ferryman, that derived heavy inspiration from the Greek myth. This story would be about a day at work for The Ferryman and how he takes the dead to the afterlife.

We have now begun production on this idea.
